Increased stress pushing principals away, departing school leader says

The principal of a top Taranaki school has resigned after 12 years in the role – and says other school leaders have congratulated him for getting out of an increasingly stressful profession.

More measuring bad policy, bad for kids, teachers say – NZEI

A recent has found increased anxiety in children as a result of National Standards. A survey of primary and intermediate schools by the New Zealand Council for Educational Research shows 63 per cent of teachers agreed, or strongly agreed, that anxiety about National Standards performance had negatively affected some students’ learning, up from 41 per cent in 2013.

Tertiary education not required

More than 100 companies have signed an open letter declaring tertiary qualifications are not required for a range of roles within their workplaces.

Secular education campaigners criticise religion in schools

The Secular Education Network says parents would be horrified if they knew what their children are being taught in Religious instruction classes. The network is launching a national campaign, targeting parents at the school gate, starting with Wharenui School in Riccarton. Tanya Jacobs says the instruction is treated as a normal lesson.

There are calls for change by one autistic support group as more and more children are excluded from school for behavioural issues.
